Recently, I had the joy of revisiting my beloved home state of West Virginia and sharing its magic with Daniel. We traveled over the Fourth of July weekend to celebrate the founding of our country surrounded by natural beauty and the warm hospitality that defines the Mountain State.

Music and Mountains

Our adventure began as we headed to Elkins, a place dear to my heart. Our first stop was Davis and Elkins College, my alma mater. While the campus is undergoing some expansions, it was wonderful to reminisce about my college days and to share those fond memories with Daniel.

We stopped for lunch at Smoke on the Water, a local BBQ spot that never disappoints with its mouthwatering flavors and local brews from Big Timber. We cannot recommend this local spot enough for the great service and amazingly creative dishes like the loaded BBQ sweet potato.

Our journey continued to Canaan Valley for the Mountainside Music Series, where we joined my parents’ neighbors and longtime friends, Mark and Kim.  We set up our lawn chairs below the ski lift and under the threat of rain to be entertained by the Silas Powell Band. Hailing from Doddridge County, WV, the band features three generations of multi-talented musicians with my father’s friend and former co-worker Jeff at the helm. Their live bluegrass music featuring many original songs, played through light rain showers, was a testament to the resilience and spirit of West Virginians.

Nature’s Masterpieces

The following day was dedicated to exploring some of West Virginia’s natural wonders. Blackwater Falls was a breathtaking sight, with its cascading waters and lush surroundings. The trip down the stairs was well worth the view and the roaring of the water could almost be heard from the first step.

After our morning adventure, we stopped for a mid-morning pick-me-up at the esteemed TipTop Coffee in Thomas. This surprisingly vibrant town with its quirky shops and friendly locals is not to be missed. One of our favorites was the Adventure Guild, a one-stop shop for all things gaming featuring private rooms for rent where tabletop games can be played in style.

We continued on to Seneca Rocks, one of my favorite places to hike. With the crowds and extremely warm weather that weekend, we elected to do a shorter hike on the backside of the mountain where the views were nothing short of spectacular with the towering rock formations leaving us in awe of nature’s beauty.

Reflections on a Journey Home

This trip reminded me of the beauty and kindness that define West Virginia. From the hospitality of its people to the stunning landscapes, every moment was a reminder of why I cherish this state.

As we returned to my parents’ home for one last night, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these cherished places with Daniel and create memories that will last a lifetime. West Virginia is more than just a place on the map; it’s a feeling, a community, and a collection of memories that I’ll always hold close to my heart.
