Day 1: Arrival and Catching Up
After a scenic drive from Raleigh, we arrived in Luray on a pleasant Tuesday in June, eagerly anticipating the adventures that awaited us. We spent the afternoon relaxing at our cozy Airbnb, relishing quality time with our parents – Sarah and Jerry, Mike and Darlene. In the evening, we delighted our taste buds with a delectable dinner at the Speakeasy restaurant, located downstairs in the historic Mimslyn Inn.
Day 2: Conquering Hawksbill Loop Trail and Skyland
The next morning, fueled by a delicious breakfast, we made our way from Luray into Shenandoah to embark on an invigorating three-mile hike along the Hawksbill Loop Trail. Immersed in the beauty of nature, we traversed the trail leading to Shenandoah’s highest peak, taking in the 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains and countryside. Half of our group was ready for more after descending the mountain, so Daniel, Mike, and I made our way back to Skyland via the renowned Appalachian Trail, adding another 2.5 miles to our hike. Celebrating our successful hikes, we savored a refreshing beer at Skyland before visiting the Big Meadows Visitors Center to delve into the park’s intriguing history.
Day 3: Chasing Sunrise and Exploring Waterfalls
With the promise of a breathtaking sunrise, Daniel, my parents, and I set off early to witness nature’s captivating display. As dawn painted the sky in vibrant hues, we reveled in the tranquil atmosphere of the park. Our day continued with a hike to the enchanting Dark Hollow Falls, followed by a loop that included the mesmerizing Rose River Falls. Having had our fill of hiking, we headed to the Big Meadows visitors center for some refreshments and happened to run into Daniel’s parents, Sarah and Jerry. After a fulfilling day in nature, we all indulged in local delights at Wisteria Vineyard and Hawksbill Brewing Company after lunch at the Big Meadows lodge.
Day 4: Thrilling Trails and Local Delights
As dawn broke over Shenandoah National Park once again, we embarked on a thrilling morning hike along Mary’s Rock Trail and Stony Man Loop. We were privileged to see the clouds roll in shortly after reaching the summit of Stony Man, threatening rain and sending us back down the mountain. We dashed back to the car, feeling accomplished and grateful for nature’s wonders. In Luray, we recharged at the cozy Gathering Grounds Patisserie and Cafe and explored local shops. Our day ended on a lively note as we embraced the sport of pickleball on the local courts in Luray.
Day 5: Lewis Falls and Cultural Discoveries
On our final full day in Shenandoah, we embarked on a scenic 3.3-mile loop hike to Lewis Falls and the Appalachian Trail. Immersed in the tranquility of nature, we marveled at the park’s serene beauty. Returning to Luray, we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon at Broad Porch Coffee Company, followed by well-deserved naps. Our adventure continued as we explored Blue Shepherd Spirits, where my parents and I indulged in tastings while Daniel took a rest.
