After my two days of networking, our first stop was the University of Kentucky Arboretum, a 100-acre public garden that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Arboretum is a haven for nature lovers, featuring an impressive collection of native plants, themed gardens, and walking trails. We spent a peaceful morning wandering through the Walk Across Kentucky, a unique pathway showcasing the state’s diverse ecosystems. This spot is perfect for a relaxing day out, whether you’re looking to enjoy a leisurely walk or a scenic picnic.
Murals That Tell a Story
Art enthusiasts will find Lexington’s mural scene truly captivating. We embarked on the Northside Mural Tour, a vibrant journey through the city’s artistic expressions. Each mural tells a unique story, reflecting the community’s spirit and creativity. The VisitLex Mural Challenge is a fantastic way to explore these artworks, providing an interactive map that guides you through the must-see murals. From whimsical designs to profound social commentaries, each piece adds a splash of color and inspiration to the cityscape.
The Distillery District: Lexington’s Crown Jewel
The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the Distillery District, a revitalized area that blends historic charm with modern vibrancy. The James E. Pepper Distillery, a cornerstone of this district, offers a fascinating glimpse into Kentucky’s whiskey heritage. We took a guided tour of the distillery, learning about the intricate process of whiskey-making and the rich history of the brand. The tour culminated in a tasting session, where we savored the distinct flavors of their renowned bourbons.

After our distillery tour, we headed to Brevede Coffee for a pick-me-up and then Wise Bird Cider Co., a local favorite known for its artisanal cider. Their cider flights allowed us to sample a range of flavors, from dry and crisp to sweet and fruity. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff made it a perfect spot to unwind.
The Heart of the City: Downtown Lexington
Downtown Lexington is alive with energy and is incredibly walkable, making it easy to explore on foot. The area is dotted with eclectic boutiques, cozy cafes, and historic landmarks. We enjoyed leisurely walks along the streets, and also explored some of the downtown murals, Transylvania University Campus and Sorella Gelateria for a final treat in the charming city.

Bonus: Camping at Camp Creek
On the way home from Kentucky, we decided to spend a night under the stars with a little camping excursion. Nestled in the heart of Camp Creek State Park, our campsite was surrounded by towering trees and the soothing sounds of nature. The highlight of the park for us was hiking the Falls Trail, a must-see for any visitor. This trail meanders through the forest, leading to two stunning waterfalls, Campbell Falls and Mash Fork Falls, where we paused to soak in the beauty and snap some photos. The trail is perfect for all skill levels, making it an enjoyable adventure for everyone. We highly recommend!
