Providence, Rhode Island, may be known as the “Creative Capital” and the home of prestigious institutions like Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, but it’s also a city steeped in history and charm. Recently, Daniel and I had the opportunity to explore this captivating city during a long weekend trip for a wedding. While our main draw to the city was to celebrate Joe, Daniel’s friend, and his blushing bride, Lily, we were excited to scratch our travel itch and explore someplace new. One of the highlights of our visit was a self-guided walking tour of downtown Providence, taking in the city’s rich history, vibrant culture, and elegant architecture. Here’s a glimpse of our unforgettable journey through the heart of Providence.
Day 1: Checking In at the Graduate Providence
Our adventure began with a warm welcome at the Graduate Providence Hotel, an iconic landmark that exudes timeless elegance. The grandeur of the lobby, with its crystal chandeliers and historic charm, instantly transported us to a bygone era. Our comfortable room provided stunning views of the city, making it the perfect base for our Providence exploration and within walking distance to the wedding venue. Built in 1922 by the Biltmore family, this hotel has long been a staple in the city, and the bride and groom could not have chosen a more perfect hotel for their guest to stay in during the celebration of their new life together.
Day 2: Exploring Downtown Providence
We embarked on our self-guided walking tour of downtown Providence early in the morning, after a quick stop at Sydney Coffee. Fully caffeinated and armed with a map (Downtown Providence Walking Tour Map) and a sense of curiosity, Daniel and I made our way into downtown for a leisurely exploration on foot.
We passed many of the attractions on our way to coffee including Burnside Park, Waterplace Park and WaterFire. Some of the other highlights of the tour included:
- Providence RiverWalk and Regattas: Following the riverwalk, we enjoyed scenic views of the Providence River and the city’s skyline. It was a pleasant way to soak in the city’s beauty and appreciate its blend of old and new. Along the Providence Riverwalk, we were fortunate to stumble upon the Riverwalk Regattas. These colorful and whimsical art installations added a touch of playfulness to our journey, inviting us to appreciate the creative spirit that thrives in Providence.
- The Arcade: The historic Arcade, known as “America’s first indoor shopping mall,” was a delightful surprise. We explored its charming shops and enjoyed a cup of coffee from Coco’s Cafe & Bar in its cozy atmosphere.
- Kennedy Plaza: Kennedy Plaza, a bustling transportation hub and public gathering place. The plaza is a vibrant intersection of art, culture, and commerce, offering a glimpse into the dynamic spirit of Providence.
After our self-guided tour, we stopped off at Tori Tomo for some ramen to warm our souls and bodies on the cool, rainy fall day. We headed back to the hotel to get ready for our wedding festivities back at the Public Library later that evening. Check out the video above for pictures of the handsome wedding couple and the amazing venue!
Day 3: RISD Museum and a Farewell to Providence
Before leaving, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the RISD Museum, located within walking distance of our hotel. The museum showcases an impressive collection of art and design, offering a glimpse into the creative world of RISD and Providence. We were captivated by the diverse exhibits, from contemporary art to ancient artifacts.
After our tour of the museum, we headed to Coffee Connection in the Custom House, an architectural masterpiece that stands as a symbol of Providence’s maritime history. Its intricate details and imposing presence are a testament to the city’s past as a thriving seaport. Once our coffee was finished, we headed back to the hotel to collect our luggage and head to the airport.
Providence, Rhode Island, may have been the backdrop for a wedding celebration, but it also became the stage for our own unforgettable adventure. From the historic Providence Biltmore Hotel to the elegant Providence Public Library and the enchanting streets of Benefit Street, every corner of this city exudes a unique character and history waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a cultural explorer, or simply seeking a charming getaway, Providence offers it all. We left this city with a deep appreciation for its heritage and a promise to return and explore more of its hidden gems.
